Chapter 16 - The Uninvited Guest

One year later, the quiet warmth of our Brooklyn apartment was shattered by a sudden, frantic knocking on the front door.
Leo was in his room packing his bags for his second semester at Columbia University.
I walked over to the door and looked through the peephole.
Standing outside was Valerie, holding a toddler in her arms, her clothes rumpled and her face stained with fresh tears.
I unlocked the door, but kept the heavy security chain in place.
"What are you doing here, Valerie?" I asked in a quiet, detached voice.
Valerie pushed her face close to the opening, her eyes wide with desperation.
"Sarah! Please! You have to help me!" Valerie sobbed, holding the crying baby closer to her chest.
"Arthur’s mother got out of prison on early medical parole two days ago!"
