Chapter 9: The Hidden Backup

We got to my office ten minutes later. Voss’s goons waited outside while he marched me to my desk, gun still pressed to my ribs. He laid out the transfer papers—every last asset, every share, every dollar.
“Sign,” he ordered. “Or I call Victoria right now.”
I picked up the pen. But before I wrote my name, I hit a tiny, hidden button under the edge of my desk—the one I’d installed after Clara died, for emergencies only. It sent an alert straight to Sarah and my most trusted security team, with my exact location.
“I need my ID card to verify the transfers,” I said. “It’s in the safe behind the wall.”
“Open it. Slow.”
I twisted the dial, pulled the door open—and grabbed the heavy fire extinguisher sitting right inside. I swung it hard, catching Voss’s wrist. The gun clattered to the floor.
We fought—knocking over chairs, smashing the glass table. He was bigger, stronger, but I was fighting for my daughter. I drove my knee into his gut, then slammed his head against the desk. He slumped to the floor, out cold.
I grabbed the gun, checked the clip, and sprinted for the door—just as my phone buzzed. A text from Sarah: Mark—Victoria’s not at the warehouse anymore. She took her to the private airport.
