Chapter 14: The Final Proof
We drove back to our old house—the one we’d lived in before Clara got sick, before I bought the penthouse. The garden shed was still there, just like we left it. I found the loose brick easily, and pulled out a thick waterproof envelope.
Inside was everything Clara had promised: financial records, witness statements, even audio recordings of Voss admitting he’d stolen trade secrets and bribed officials. It was enough to put him away for twenty years—and clear every last doubt about Hale Corp’s future.
But there was one more thing: a letter, addressed to me.
My dearest Mark, it read. If you’re reading this, I’m gone—and Voss has made his move. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I didn’t want you to worry. But know this: you are stronger than you think. And Lily? She’s braver than both of us put together. Protect her. And don’t let anyone take what’s yours—and what’s rightfully hers, too. I love you both more than words can say.
I folded the letter carefully and put it in my pocket. When I looked up, Lily was crying softly.
“She knew,” she whispered. “Mom knew we’d be okay.”
