Chapter 3: The Secret Note

I drove straight to the private clinic my family’s used for years. The doctor worked fast—cleaning cuts, stitching the worst gashes, wrapping Lily’s back and knees. She didn’t say a word the whole time, just stared at her hands in her lap.

When we were alone in the exam room, I pulled a chair close. “Lily. Talk to me. What happened? Why were you on those shells?”

She flinched like I’d yelled. “I… I found something in her closet. A letter.”

“What kind of letter?”

“From her brother. He’s in debt. Huge debt. And she wrote back saying she’d ‘get the inheritance soon’—said you’d never notice if things went ‘missing little by little.’” She looked up, eyes wide and terrified. “I was gonna tell you. But she caught me reading it. Said I was snooping, that I was ruining her life.”

My blood ran cold. I’d met Victoria’s brother once—knew he was a gambler, but never thought she’d drag us into it. “Where’s the letter now?”

“She took it back. Tore it up. Before you got home.” She swallowed hard, then pulled a crumpled scrap of paper from her sock—edges stained with blood. “This was all I could grab.”

I unfolded it carefully. Only two lines were legible: …once the accounts are transferred, we can pay off the sharks… and the girl won’t be a problem anymore.

Before I could ask what that meant, my phone buzzed. It was my head of security. His voice was tight, terrified.

“Mr. Hale. You need to get back to the penthouse right now. The whole place is crawling with police. They say… they say you’re under arrest for embezzlement.”
