Chapter 5: The Unexpected Ally

I spent three hours in the holding cell before my lawyer finally showed up. But it wasn’t just him—standing right behind him was Sarah Bennett, my first wife’s oldest sister. The last person I expected to see.
“Sarah? What are you doing here?”
She didn’t smile. Just handed me a thick folder. “I’ve been watching her for months. Ever since she started asking questions about Clara’s will. Victoria didn’t just marry you for money, Mark. She was hired.”
“Hired? By who?”
“Someone who’s wanted Hale Corp dead for ten years. Your old partner, Julian Voss. You kicked him out for cutting corners—now he’s back to take everything.” She tapped the folder. “These are emails between them. Proof she’s been working for him all along. The embezzlement trail? It’s fake—they used a backdoor program Voss wrote years ago to forge your signature.”
My head spun. Six months. She’d been in my house, near my daughter, sleeping in my bed—all as part of a plan to destroy me.
“Where’s Lily?” I asked suddenly. “They didn’t take her too, did they?”
Sarah’s face fell. “That’s the problem. When we called the clinic to check on her… she’s gone. The nurse said Victoria showed up with ‘a court order’ to take her into ‘protective custody.’”
