Chapter 15: The Settlement
A week later, Victoria asked to meet me one last time—at the police station, under supervision. She looked tired, worn down, no more fancy clothes or sharp makeup.
“I just wanted to say… I’m sorry,” she said. “For Lily. For your wife. For everything. My brother… he’s safe now. The police put him in witness protection. That’s all I ever wanted.”
“I hope it was worth it,” I said. “Because you threw your whole life away for someone who used you.”
“I know. But I’m taking responsibility. I’m testifying against Voss—telling them everything I know. Maybe that’ll be enough to keep Lily safe.”
It wouldn’t undo what she’d done. But it was something.
That afternoon, the board of Hale Corp voted unanimously to keep me as CEO—and to name Lily as my official successor, with full rights to Clara’s original stake. She’d never have to worry about money, or safety, or anyone taking what belonged to her.
