CHAPTER 6: THE COURTROOM

The day of the hearing arrived.
Brandon sat on the other side of the courtroom with his lawyer. He looked pale, anxious, and completely defeated.
I walked in with my head held high.
The judge entered and the hearing began.
"Mrs. Watson," the judge said, "you're seeking full custody of your twin daughters. Is that correct?"
"Yes, Your Honor."
"On what grounds?"
I took a deep breath.
"On the grounds that my husband, Brandon Watson, abandoned me and our children for four days while I was suffering from severe exhaustion and postpartum depression. He left to go on a vacation with his friends, and when I asked for help, he told me to 'act like a mother.'"
The courtroom was silent.
Brandon's lawyer objected, but the judge overruled.
"Continue," the judge said.
"He left me alone with two six-month-old babies. I had no sleep, no help, no support. And when he came back, I realized I couldn't keep living like that."
I pulled out a folder and handed it to the judge.
"I have documented proof of his abandonment. I have text messages. I have voicemails. I have witness testimony."
The judge reviewed the documents.
Brandon was crying now.
"She's making this up," he said.
"Am I?" I asked. "Then explain why you were gone for four days. Explain why you left me alone with two babies who were crying, hungry, and exhausted. Explain why you didn't call once to check on them."
He didn't have an answer.

Because he knew he was guilty.
And so did everyone else in the courtroom.
