CHAPTER 14: THE CONFESSION

A few months later, Brandon admitted something I hadn't expected.

"I was jealous," he said.

"What?"

"When the girls were born, you gave them all your attention. You barely looked at me."

"I was exhausted, Brandon. I was trying to keep two babies alive."

"I know. But I felt replaced. I felt like I didn't matter anymore."

"You could have helped. You could have supported me."

"I know. I was selfish. I wanted you to need me, but I wasn't willing to do anything to help."

"That's not how marriage works."

"I know that now. But I didn't know that then."

I was quiet for a long moment.

"I was drowning," I said. "And you let me."

"I know. I'm sorry."

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For admitting it."

He nodded.

"I'm trying to be honest. With myself. With you. With the girls."

"That's a start."

"I'm going to keep trying."

We sat in silence.

And for the first time, I felt like we were having a real conversation.

Not about the past.

May you like

But about the future.

And that was more important than anything.
