CHAPTER 15: THE FUTURE

It's been five years since the divorce.
Lila and Ivy are ten years old now. They're smart, funny, and full of life. They have their own interests, their own friends, their own dreams.
I'm still working. I'm still writing. I'm still advocating for single mothers.
But I'm also happy.
I've met someone new. His name is David. He's kind, patient, and understanding. He treats me like I deserve to be treated.
Brandon is still in the girls' lives. He has made progress, though it hasn't been easy. He has apologized for the way he treated me, and while I haven't fully forgiven him, I have learned to coexist with him for the sake of our children.
We've found a way to be a family—not the way I imagined, but maybe the way we needed.
The wounds are still there.
But they're no longer raw.
And I've learned something important.
I don't need to forgive Brandon to move on.
I don't need him to be sorry to heal.
I need to believe in myself.
And I do.
I trust myself.
I trust my strength.
And I trust my future.
A year later, I married David. Lila and Ivy were our flower girls.
Brandon came to the wedding.
He shook David's hand.
"Take care of them," he said.
"I will," David said.
"Thank you for being in their lives."
"Thank you for trusting me."
Brandon looked at me.
"I'm happy for you," he said.
I smiled.
"I'm happy too."
We danced at the reception. The girls danced with their father. They danced with their stepfather.
It was messy, complicated, and not what I had ever imagined.
But it was beautiful.
Because we had survived.
And we had found love again.
I looked at David, at the girls, at the life we had built.
"I love you," I said.
"I love you too," he said.
"I'm happy. Finally, I'm happy."
"Me too."
And I knew, in that moment, that I had everything I needed.
My daughters.
My husband.
My strength.
My future.
And I was ready for whatever came next.
Because I had survived the worst.
And I had found the best.
That was my legacy.
That was my life.
And I wouldn't trade it for anything.
