CHAPTER 13: THE FATHER'S DAY

Father's Day arrived.

I took the girls to see Brandon at his apartment. He had decorated with balloons and streamers, and he had made a cake.

"Happy Father's Day, Daddy," the girls said.

He started crying.

"Thank you. Thank you so much."

He hugged them tight.

Then he looked at me.

"Thank you," he said. "For bringing them."

"They're your daughters."

"I know. I don't deserve them."

"Maybe you do," I said. "You've been working hard. I've seen the change."

He smiled.

"It's not easy. But I'm trying."

"That's all I ever wanted."

We watched the girls play, and I felt a sense of peace.

The bitterness was fading.

The anger was fading.

And in its place was something new.

Not forgiveness.

But acceptance.

We had come a long way.

May you like

And we still had a long way to go.

But for the first time, I believed it was possible.
