CHAPTER 5: THE LAWYER

The divorce was brutal.

Brandon fought everything. He wanted full custody of the girls, even though he'd barely spent any time with them. He wanted to keep the house, even though I had been the one to maintain it. He wanted to make me look like the bad guy.

But I had a lawyer who was fierce and relentless.

"You have everything you need to win this," she told me. "You have documented proof that he abandoned you and the children. You have witnesses who saw him leave. And you have the truth."

"What about the custody battle?"

"You'll get full custody. He has no grounds to take the girls from you."

"What about the house?"

"You'll keep it. It's in your name."

"And the money?"

"You'll get alimony and child support. He'll have to pay."

I felt a sense of relief washing over me.

"Good."

"One more thing," my lawyer said.

"What?"

"You need to prepare yourself for what he's going to say."

"What do you mean?"

"He's going to try to destroy you. He's going to make you look unstable. He's going to twist the story."

I took a deep breath.

"I'm ready."

The trial began three months later.

And when I walked into that courtroom, I knew I was going to win.
