Chapter 9 - Box 714-03

Mercer Vault locked remote access.
Too late.
One file had been downloaded.
Richard Vale’s private pathology records.
Julian stared at the log.
“Why that file?”
Ethan answered.
“Because it can prove murder.”
They drove to the Vale medical archive before sunrise.
Julian used emergency family authority.
Richard’s preserved pathology slides still existed.
The hospital toxicologist agreed to review them off-record pending court authorization.
Two hours later, she returned.
“His medication levels were extreme.”
Julian’s face tightened.
“How extreme?”
“Several times therapeutic range.”
“Accidental?”
“Not from ordinary dosing.”
Mara watched him absorb it.
Not as billionaire.
As son.
He whispered, “He killed my father.”
The toxicologist said nothing.
Mara opened Margaret’s ledger on the table.
R.V. MEDICAL.
Payments to Dr. Voss.
Medication supply.
Private visits.
Then another column.
E.E. AUDIT.
Elena Ellison.
Julian looked over.
“My father hired your mother because he knew.”
Mara nodded.
“Enough to investigate.”
She found Elena’s final report.
BRAKE-LINE RISK / VALE ACCESS / ASHFORD COURIER.
Ashford again.
Julian called Celeste.
She answered crying.
“I told you everything.”
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“Your father.”
Silence.
“Victor is dead.”
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
“Cause?”
“Stroke.”
Ethan shook his head.
Records said no autopsy.
Mara asked, “Did he know my mother?”
Celeste whispered, “Yes.”
“How?”
“Graham used him.”
“For what?”
“Moving files. Paying people.”
“Did he kill Elena?”
“No.”
Too fast.
Mara’s chest tightened.
“How do you know?”
“Because he came home that night covered in blood.”
Silence.
Celeste started sobbing.
“He said there had been an accident.”
Mara’s hand went numb.
“What blood?”
“I don’t know.”
“Whose?”
“I don’t know.”
Julian said, “Where did he keep documents?”
Celeste gave them a property address.
Old Ashford lake house.
The same lake house from family records.
They arrived at dusk.
Dust.
Covered furniture.
Locked study.
Ethan broke the old latch.
Inside:
Victor’s notebooks.
Payments from Graham.
Surveillance on Mara.
Photos of Elena.
One photo showed Elena meeting Ethan.
Another showed Elena meeting Richard.
Then a final one.
Elena beside an elderly woman in a wheelchair.
Silver hair.
Thin face.
Mara stared.
“Who is that?”
Julian’s breath stopped.
“Margaret.”
Alive.
The photo was dated four years after Margaret supposedly disappeared.
Mara’s hands shook.
Then she saw the back.
Victor had written:
M.V. STILL ALIVE. RICHARD MOVED HER. GRAHAM CANNOT KNOW.
Mara looked at Julian.
“My grandmother survived.”
A floorboard creaked behind them.
Ethan turned.
Gun raised.
A woman’s voice said:
“She did more than survive.”
Julian’s oldest housekeeper, Evelyn Shaw, stood in the doorway.
Her eyes fixed on Mara.
May you like
“She lived in your house for six months.”
CUT.
