Chapter 15 - The Maid Who Was Never Just a Maid

Mara could not move.

The man in the hallway did not come closer.

He looked at her like he had already lost the right.

“Mara.”

His voice broke the last doubt.

She remembered it.

Not clearly.

A bedtime song.

A laugh near a kitchen sink.

One word spoken when she scraped her knee.

Daddy.

Her knees weakened.

Julian caught her elbow.

She pulled away.

Not angry at him.

Needing space.

“You died.”

David Ellison looked down.

“That was the plan.”

Mara laughed.

A sharp sound.

“Everyone in my family loves plans.”

He flinched.

“Your mother agreed.”

“No.”

“She did.”

“No.”

“She thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”

Mara stared at Elena’s ghost in every lie.

“From Graham?”

“Yes.”

“Why did he care about you?”

David entered slowly.

He held a file.

“Because I was Richard’s investigator before Elena.”

Julian frowned.

“You worked for my father?”

“Yes.”

“On Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“On Graham?”

“Yes.”

Mara’s hands curled.

“And then you married Elena.”

“I loved her.”

“Convenient.”

His face tightened.

“I met her because of the case. I stayed because of her.”

“What happened?”

“Graham identified me.”

“So you faked your death.”

“Yes.”

“And left us.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt worse than excuses.

“You watched us struggle.”

“No.”

“You were alive.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Mom work herself sick.”

“I sent money.”

Mara laughed.

“We were evicted twice.”

David closed his eyes.

“Graham intercepted accounts.”

“Then come home.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You could.”

He looked at her.

“If I appeared, Graham would know Elena still had Margaret’s evidence.”

Mara pointed toward Margaret.

“She was alive.”

“Yes.”

“And Mom knew?”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan?”

David looked at him.

“Yes.”

Mara turned on Ethan.

“You knew my father was alive.”

“Not where.”

“Did you know he survived?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eleven years.”

She slapped him.

One sharp movement.

Ethan accepted it.

Julian said nothing.

Mara’s hand stung.

Good.

Something real.

David handed her the file.

“Your mother made me promise you would get this only if Graham was arrested.”

Inside:

Birth certificate.

DNA test.

Payments.

Surveillance.

One photograph.

David holding baby Mara.

Elena beside him.

Margaret in the background.

Mara’s throat tightened.

“So you are my father.”

“Yes.”

Margaret made a broken sound.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

David’s face changed.

Margaret pointed at him.

“No.”

Mara stared.

“What?”

Margaret’s breathing quickened.

She reached for the locket.

“David protected you.”

“Yes.”

“He loved Elena.”

“Yes.”

“But…”

Her hand shook.

“He is not your father.”

Silence crushed the room.

David closed his eyes.

Mara looked at him.

“You just said—”

“I raised you.”

“That is not what I asked.”

His jaw trembled.

“Elena never told me until after we married.”

Mara’s chest tightened.

“Who?”

No answer.

“Who is my biological father?”

Margaret looked toward Julian.

Julian froze.

Mara followed her eyes.

“No.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Not Julian.”

Air returned.

Then she whispered a name.

“Ethan Ward.”

Mara stopped breathing.

Ethan’s face drained completely.

David looked at him.

Not surprised.

Mara turned slowly.

Ethan had been there after the modeling scandal.

After Elena’s death.

Inside Julian’s house.

At every step of the investigation.

Watching.

Protecting.

Lying.

Mara’s voice barely came out.

“You?”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know until Elena told me.”

“When?”

“Three days before she died.”

Mara stared.

He had known for seven years.

Margaret tightened her grip on Mara’s wrist.

Then whispered:

“That isn’t the worst part.”

Mara looked down.

Margaret’s eyes moved to the silver locket.

“Graham never paid Ethan to watch you.”

Ethan went still.

Margaret continued:

“Your mother did.”

Mara’s pulse hammered.

“Why?”

Margaret looked directly at Ethan.

“Because Elena was afraid Mara would discover what happened the night she was born.”

The room went silent.

Mara opened her mouth.

Then Ethan whispered:

May you like

“Mara… there were two babies.”

CUT.
