Chapter 6 - Why Celeste Ruined Mara

Celeste backed into the wall.
“I didn’t get in.”
Mara stared at her.
“That is what you’re leading with?”
“I was trying to stop Graham.”
Julian laughed.
“No.”
“I was.”
“You planted a bracelet in Mara’s locker tonight.”
“I panicked.”
“You tried to enter Margaret’s vault yesterday.”
“Because Graham ordered me.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Why obey him?”
Celeste looked at Julian.
Then at her engagement ring.
“Because he built everything.”
Julian’s face tightened.
“What?”
“My career. My introductions. Us.”
The room went silent.
Julian looked at her.
“Our relationship?”
She started crying again.
“Not all of it.”
“That means yes.”
“Julian.”
“How?”
“Graham arranged the Vale Foundation campaign eleven years ago.”
“We know.”
“He introduced me to people. Agents. Designers.”
“And paid you to ruin Mara.”
“Yes.”
Mara’s chest burned.
Celeste continued.
“Then years later he put me at the same charity dinner as Julian.”
Julian’s face emptied.
“You were sent.”
“At first.”
The answer destroyed whatever remained.
He took her hand off his arm.
Celeste whispered, “I fell in love with you.”
Julian laughed once.
“Convenient timing.”
“It’s true.”
Mara turned away.
She had no patience for their heartbreak.
“Why the vault?”
Celeste swallowed.
“Graham thinks Margaret hid trust records.”
“What trust?”
“Vale Foundation.”
Julian frowned.
“Our family foundation is audited.”
“Now.”
Celeste looked at Mara.
“Not then.”
Ethan brought the car.
Mercer Vault occupied two quiet floors beneath an old bank building.
The manager inspected the locket.
Matched the engraving.
Opened Box 714-03.
Inside were ledgers.
Letters.
A small cassette recorder.
And one sealed envelope marked:
ELENA.
Mara touched it.
Her mother’s name.
She opened the ledger first.
Transfers from Vale Foundation accounts.
Money routed through Ashford shell companies.
Graham’s initials.
Thomas Ashford’s signature.
Then one repeated category:
R.V. MEDICAL.
Julian’s face changed.
“Richard Vale.”
His father.
Mara turned the page.
“What does it mean?”
Julian shook his head.
The next letter was Margaret’s.
Richard is not taking the money.
Graham is paying to keep Richard sick.
Julian stopped breathing.
Mara looked at him.
“What?”
He read the line again.
Then another.
If Richard dies, Graham controls the voting trust.
Julian sat hard.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
Mara stared.
“What did they say happened?”
“Cardiac complications.”
She turned another page.
Medication reimbursements.
Private physician.
Sedatives.
Cardiac drugs.
One doctor’s initials.
H.V.
Ethan said, “Henry Voss?”
Julian frowned.
“Old family physician.”
Mara found one more envelope.
Richard’s handwriting.
TO ELENA ELLISON.
Julian stared.
“My father knew your mother.”
Mara’s hands went cold.
She opened it.
Elena,
If you are reading this, Graham knows you found the ledgers.
Mara looked at Julian.
His father had hired Elena.
May you like
And neither of them had known.
