Chapter 13 - The Wedding Plan

Ethan raised his gun.
Graham laughed.
“You won’t shoot me.”
Ethan’s hand stayed steady.
“Try me.”
Graham looked at Mara.
“You found Margaret’s box.”
“Yes.”
“Richard’s safe.”
“Yes.”
“Elena’s report.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Yes.”
His face tightened.
“You have no idea what those women cost this family.”
Julian’s voice went cold.
“They were this family.”
Graham turned.
“You sound like Richard at the end.”
“Good.”
“No. Weak.”
Julian smiled faintly.
“Yet here you are cornered in an old lake house.”
Graham’s eyes shifted to the window.
Ethan noticed.
Police sirens in the distance.
Celeste had triggered the silent location alert.
For once, she chose correctly.
Graham looked at her.
“You stupid girl.”
She flinched.
Then stood straighter.
“You said that eleven years ago.”
Mara stared.
Celeste nodded.
“He used the same words when he paid me.”
Graham backed toward the hall.
Ethan moved.
Graham threw something.
Flash device.
White light.
Mara dropped.
A door slammed.
Ethan ran.
Julian pulled Mara up.
Outside, engine screamed.
Graham fled in an old SUV.
Police chased.
He did not make it far.
Roadblock.
Arrest.
No dramatic gunfight.
Just handcuffs beside wet leaves.
Mara watched from the porch.
It should have felt finished.
It did not.
Graham shouted as police put him in the car:
“Ask Richard who Margaret came back as!”
Julian froze.
Mara looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn answered later at the mansion.
“Richard made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“When he rescued Margaret, she was drugged. Disoriented. Graham had already created records under another identity.”
“Whose?”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“Elena Ellison.”
Mara stared.
“My mother was a child.”
“Not your mother. Another Elena Ellison.”
Same name.
A false identity reused later.
Mara’s head hurt.
Evelyn continued.
“Richard hid Margaret under that name for years.”
“That is why Graham targeted my mother when he saw her legal name.”
“Yes.”
“He thought the identity line had resurfaced.”
“Yes.”
Pattern.
Identity.
Women erased beneath other women.
Julian said, “Where is Margaret now?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Still protected.”
“Take us.”
She hesitated.
Mara stepped forward.
“Please.”
Evelyn nodded.
Before they left, Julian played the final Richard tape recovered from Graham’s vehicle.
Richard appeared.
“If Margaret is found, do not assume her memory is complete.”
Mara’s chest tightened.
“She remembers fragments.”
Then Richard said:
“She remembers one man clearly.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
Mara noticed.
The tape continued.
“The man who visited her during protected care.”
Mara looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
Richard said:
“He called himself Mara’s father.”
Mara stopped breathing.
Ethan whispered:
“Richard…”
Mara turned.
“You knew?”
May you like
He did not answer.
CUT.
