Chapter 10 - How Julian's Father Really Died

Mara stared at Evelyn.
“My house?”
“Your mother’s apartment.”
“When?”
“You were four.”
Mara’s skin went cold.
“No.”
Evelyn stepped inside.
“Richard moved Margaret after Graham found the first safe house.”
Julian looked at her.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since I was twenty-nine.”
“You worked for my father.”
“I worked for your aunt first.”
That stopped him.
Evelyn sat.
Her hands trembled.
“Margaret came back from the Ashford lake house injured. Richard hid her.”
“From Graham?”
“Yes.”
“What happened at the lake?”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“Graham wanted the trust ledgers.”
“Did he hurt her?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“He drugged her. Held her. Made her sign papers.”
Mara’s chest burned.
“Then?”
“Richard got her out.”
“Why did everyone think she fled?”
“Because Richard let them.”
Julian whispered, “My father protected her.”
“Eventually.”
The word carried weight.
“What did he do before?”
“He believed Graham.”
Julian looked away.
Evelyn continued.
“Margaret lived under another name. Richard paid for care. Elena found her years later.”
Mara’s eyes filled.
“My mother knew.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because Graham was still looking.”
Ethan asked, “Where is Margaret now?”
Evelyn looked at Mara.
“Alive.”
Mara stopped breathing.
“Where?”
“Connecticut.”
Julian stood.
“We go.”
“No.”
Evelyn’s voice sharpened.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Graham monitors the care residence.”
Ethan frowned.
“I never found that.”
“You were never supposed to.”
Silence.
Mara looked at Ethan.
Another withheld truth.
Another layer.
Evelyn handed Julian a key.
“Richard’s private evidence safe.”
“Where?”
“In this mansion.”
Julian stared.
“I’ve searched everything.”
“You searched what you knew existed.”
They returned to Manhattan.
Evelyn led them to an old wine storage room.
Behind a wall panel:
Steel safe.
Key entered.
Julian opened it.
Inside:
Video tapes.
Richard’s confession.
Graham’s payment records.
Elena’s report.
One envelope labeled CELESTE.
Another labeled MARA.
Julian played Richard’s final video.
His father appeared older.
Breathing badly.
“Julian, if you see this, Graham found the path back to Margaret.”
Julian’s hand tightened.
Richard continued.
“I made mistakes.”
Then:
“I believed Graham when he said Margaret stole from us.”
Mara watched Julian’s face.
Richard said:
“She did not.”
The next line hit harder.
“I helped bury her reputation before I learned the truth.”
Julian shut his eyes.
There it was.
The fortune.
The family.
Built partly on a lie.
Richard continued.
“Graham also knows Elena has the ledgers.”
Then the video jumped.
A second segment.
“Victor Ashford is compromised.”
A third.
“If anything happens to Elena, check Victor’s car.”
Ethan swore.
They already knew the brake line.
Julian played the last segment.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“Margaret never disappeared voluntarily.”
Mara leaned closer.
“She came back alive.”
Julian whispered, “We know.”
Then Richard said:
“But the woman Graham returned from the lake house was not Margaret.”
The screen went black.
Mara frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn’s voice came from behind them.
“It means Graham used a substitute to fake her disappearance.”
Mara turned.
Evelyn looked at her.
May you like
“And the substitute was your mother.”
CUT.
