Chapter 7 - Who Was Elena's Father?

Mara read Richard’s letter twice.
Then she forced herself to continue.
Do not come to the mansion.
Do not contact Julian.
Keep the locket hidden.
If Margaret’s records are intact, Graham will assume they died with her.
Mara’s throat tightened.
Elena had spent years obeying a dead man’s instructions.
Julian stared at his father’s signature.
“When?”
The letter was dated fourteen years earlier.
Before Mara’s modeling career collapsed.
Before Elena died.
Before Celeste was paid.
Ethan said, “Richard knew Graham was moving against them.”
Julian nodded slowly.
“And he used Elena to investigate.”
Mara looked at him.
“My mother was a bookkeeper.”
“A forensic bookkeeper,” Ethan said.
He had already searched professional records.
Contract work.
Bank reconciliations.
Fraud reviews.
Elena had hidden an entire career beneath ordinary tax-prep jobs.
Mara sat.
“She never told me.”
“She was protecting you.”
The phrase made Mara angry.
“Everyone says that after they lie.”
Julian did not argue.
They found another folder.
Elena’s invoices to Richard.
Every amount:
$1.00.
Julian understood.
“Symbolic engagement.”
“What does that do?”
“Creates documented professional relationship.”
“Privilege?”
“Possibly.”
Elena had built a legal shield around her work.
One final invoice.
Dated nine days before Richard died.
Scope:
ASHFORD / GRAHAM TRUST DIVERSION.
Mara’s pulse climbed.
She opened Elena’s report.
Graham had used old charitable trusts to move assets into companies controlled through Thomas Ashford.
Thomas eventually objected.
Margaret found out.
Then vanished.
Richard later reopened the investigation.
Then died.
Mara whispered, “Same pattern.”
Julian looked at her.
“People who found it disappeared.”
Mara’s phone rang.
Sophie.
She almost answered.
Then Ethan stopped her.
“Wait.”
He looked at the screen.
Caller ID correct.
But the incoming route showed a masked relay.
Mara’s stomach dropped.
Ethan answered on speaker.
No Sophie.
A man’s voice.
“Stop opening boxes.”
Mara went cold.
“Who is this?”
“Someone who knows your sister’s campus address.”
Julian stood.
Ethan was already signaling security.
Mara’s hands shook.
“Touch her and—”
The caller laughed.
“You sound like Margaret.”
Then disconnected.
Mara called Sophie directly.
She answered.
Safe.
At the library.
Security was sent immediately.
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“Graham.”
Ethan said, “Maybe.”
Mara looked at him.
“Maybe?”
“Someone wants us to assume him.”
That was worse.
She returned to Elena’s report.
One appendix.
Car accident.
Elena Ellison.
The death Mara had accepted seven years ago.
Police report.
Wet road.
Brake failure.
Julian looked at the photographs.
Ethan zoomed in.
Cut brake line.
Clean slice.
Mara’s mouth went dry.
“That was not an accident.”
Julian looked at her.
“No.”
A final document slid from the folder.
Elena’s handwritten note.
IF I DIE, DO NOT TRUST THE PERSON WHO COMES TO HELP MARA FIRST.
Mara stared.
Eleven years ago, after the modeling scandal, one person had helped her family with rent.
A private security consultant who later joined Julian’s household.
Ethan Ward.
Mara slowly looked up.
May you like
Ethan was standing across the room.
CUT.
