Chapter 3 - The Video Celeste Deleted

Julian’s hand closed around the back of a chair.

“Graham?”

Celeste looked at Ethan.

Then at the locked door.

“Let me leave.”

“No.”

“Julian.”

“No.”

Mara’s locket felt hot against her palm.

“Who is Graham?”

Julian answered without looking away from Celeste.

“My uncle.”

The door opened after Ethan checked the hallway.

Julian’s family archivist brought an old leather case from the private library.

Julian unlocked it himself.

Photographs.

Baptisms.

Weddings.

Board portraits.

Then Margaret.

Mara stopped breathing.

The woman in the photograph had Elena’s cheekbones.

Her eyebrows.

Mara’s eyes.

And the silver locket.

Same dent.

Same chain design.

Mara sat without meaning to.

“My mother had one picture of her.”

Julian looked up.

“What did she call her?”

“She didn’t.”

“What?”

“Elena said her mother left before she could remember her.”

Julian pulled another file.

Official family biography.

MARGARET VALE.

Disappeared at twenty-nine.

No known children.

Suspected theft from Vale Foundation accounts.

Last confirmed sighting: 1998.

Mara stared.

“That’s a lie.”

Julian’s mouth tightened.

“I grew up believing it.”

Ethan quietly set a tablet beside him.

“Genealogy archive.”

Julian scrolled.

Margaret’s file had been sealed.

Password protected by his father.

Richard Vale.

Julian tried an old family phrase.

Failed.

Then Ethan noticed a handwritten note on the file tab.

MV-71403.

Mara looked at the locket.

“Wait.”

She turned it over.

Three worn marks near the back seam.

Not numbers she had ever understood.

Julian brought it beneath the desk lamp.

7-14-03.

Then M.V.

His face tightened.

“This is not decorative.”

Celeste whispered, “Don’t.”

Mara looked at her.

“What is it?”

Celeste said nothing.

Julian entered the code.

The archive opened.

One scanned note from Richard.

CHILD MAY HAVE SURVIVED.

GRAHAM MUST NOT KNOW.

Mara’s stomach dropped.

“My mother.”

Julian nodded slowly.

“Maybe.”

The library door opened.

Ethan moved instantly.

A man in his late sixties entered with a black cane and silver hair.

Tailored suit.

No surprise.

He looked at Julian.

Then Celeste.

Then Mara.

His gaze stopped on the locket.

His grip tightened around the cane.

Barely.

Mara saw it.

Julian did too.

“Uncle Graham.”

Graham smiled.

“I heard dinner became interesting.”

Julian closed the archive.

“Who told you?”

“People talk.”

“Not from a locked security room.”

Graham ignored him.

He looked at Mara.

“Miss…”

“Mara Ellison.”

His eyes changed.

“Elena.”

The word slipped out.

Mara went still.

Graham corrected himself immediately.

“Mara.”

Julian stepped forward.

“How do you know Elena?”

Graham smiled.

“I’m old.”

“That is not an answer.”

Mara’s voice came out sharper.

“My mother died six years ago.”

Graham looked at her.

“No.”

Silence.

He tapped the cane once.

“She died seven.”

Mara stopped breathing.

Julian looked at him.

“You know the exact year.”

Graham’s smile vanished.

Ethan moved toward the door.

Graham said softly:

May you like

“You should ask Mara why her mother spent the last decade of her life running from this family.”

CUT.
