Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Disappeared

Mara crossed the room before Julian could stop her.

“What did my mother run from?”

Graham did not flinch.

“History.”

“That is not a person.”

“No.”

He looked at Julian.

“But people usually carry it.”

Julian said, “You recognized the locket.”

“Of course.”

“Why did Richard write that you must not know about Margaret’s child?”

Graham’s face hardened.

“My brother became paranoid.”

“Near the end?”

“Years before.”

Mara said, “Did you know Elena?”

Graham looked at her.

“Yes.”

The admission cut clean.

“How?”

“She contacted me.”

“When?”

“Long ago.”

“Why?”

“She wanted money.”

Mara laughed.

“No.”

“You were a child.”

“I knew my mother.”

“Children know what mothers show them.”

Julian stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Graham turned.

“What are you doing, Julian?”

“Listening.”

“To a maid?”

Mara’s jaw tightened.

Julian’s face went cold.

“To family, apparently.”

Graham stopped.

That landed.

Celeste sat in the corner, silent now.

Julian turned to Ethan.

“Pull everything tied to Elena Ellison.”

Ethan nodded.

Graham said, “Don’t.”

Everyone looked at him.

He recovered too slowly.

Julian smiled without humor.

“Why?”

“Because Richard already did.”

“Then I’ll read his work.”

Graham’s cane struck the floor once.

“You are opening a grave.”

Mara said, “Maybe someone buried the wrong person.”

Silence.

Ethan’s tablet chimed.

A search result.

Vale Foundation campaign archives.

Eleven years ago.

The jewelry shoot.

Mara’s modeling scandal.

Foundation liaison:

GRAHAM VALE.

Mara’s lungs tightened.

Julian stared.

Graham looked away.

“Coincidence.”

Ethan opened financial records.

One payment three days after Mara was blacklisted.

$75,000.

From:

G.V. Strategic Consulting.

To:

CELESTE ASHFORD.

Celeste began crying.

Mara looked at her.

“No.”

Celeste covered her face.

Julian’s voice lowered.

“What did he pay you for?”

Celeste shook her head.

“Nothing.”

Ethan placed the transaction on the screen.

Payment memo:

MV CONTAINMENT.

Mara stared.

Graham moved toward the door.

Ethan blocked him.

Julian said, “Nobody leaves.”

Celeste stood suddenly.

“I didn’t know who she was.”

Mara’s hands went cold.

“What did you know?”

“That Graham wanted the girl with the silver necklace gone.”

Mara stared.

“You destroyed my life for seventy-five thousand dollars.”

Celeste cried harder.

“I was twenty-three.”

“So was I.”

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

Celeste looked at Graham.

He said, “Do not.”

Julian stepped between them.

“Tell her.”

Celeste swallowed.

“He said if anyone in the Vale family saw that locket, they would start asking who Margaret had a child with.”

Mara’s pulse jumped.

Julian frowned.

“Who did she?”

Celeste shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Graham laughed softly.

Everyone looked at him.

He stared at Mara.

“You want a family secret?”

His eyes moved to the locket.

“Ask the Ashfords.”

Celeste went white.

Mara turned.

“What does your family have to do with my grandmother?”

Celeste whispered:

May you like

“Margaret Vale was pregnant by my grandfather.”

CUT.
