Chapter 5 - Uncle Graham

Celeste’s words broke something open.

Mara stared at her.

“Your grandfather.”

“Thomas Ashford.”

Julian knew the name.

“Old Ashford Hotels.”

Celeste nodded.

Mara looked between them.

“So Elena’s father was Thomas Ashford.”

Celeste whispered, “That’s what Graham told me.”

Graham’s face hardened.

“Careful.”

Celeste turned on him.

“You’re not protecting me now.”

“No.”

“You never did.”

For the first time, hatred replaced fear.

Julian said, “What did Thomas know?”

Celeste wiped her face.

“I don’t know.”

Graham laughed.

“She knows nothing.”

Mara looked at him.

“Then you tell us.”

He leaned on his cane.

“Margaret had an affair. She got pregnant. The family objected. She left.”

“And stole money?”

He paused.

“Yes.”

Julian caught it.

“So why did Richard write Graham must not know the child survived?”

Graham’s jaw tightened.

No answer.

Ethan quietly handed Mara another file.

Margaret’s archived letters.

One had never been opened digitally.

Scanned from paper.

Thomas knows what Graham did to the trust.

Mara read it aloud.

Silence.

Another line.

If anything happens to me, the proof is inside what I left Elena.

Mara touched the locket.

Graham moved.

Fast for his age.

He reached for it.

Ethan caught his wrist.

The cane hit the floor.

Julian stared.

That was the first physical confirmation.

The locket mattered.

Graham pulled free.

“You have no right.”

Mara laughed.

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

“It belongs to Vale.”

“No.”

Julian stepped closer.

“It belongs to Mara.”

Graham looked at his nephew.

“You are making a mistake.”

“Probably.”

Julian’s eyes hardened.

“But not the one you want.”

Graham left under escort.

Celeste stayed.

No one trusted her enough to let her move unsupervised.

Mara sat at the table.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

Julian noticed.

“Take a minute.”

“I’ve taken eleven years.”

He stopped.

She held up the locket.

“How do we open it?”

Ethan brought a jewelry magnifier.

The back plate had hairline seams.

Julian used a small tool from the estate repair kit.

The plate lifted.

Inside:

No photograph.

No paper.

An engraved sequence.

7-14-03 / MV.

Julian stared.

“MV.”

“Mara Vale?”

“No.”

He looked at Ethan.

“Mercer Vault.”

Ethan nodded.

Old private records company.

Used by the Vale family before digitization.

Julian called.

The archive still existed.

Box 714-03.

Owner:

Margaret Vale.

Access instruction:

Present locket.

Mara’s heart hammered.

“We go now.”

The archive manager hesitated on the phone.

“Ms. Ellison?”

“Yes.”

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone attempted access yesterday.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Who?”

The manager checked the authorization log.

Then answered:

“Celeste Ashford.”

Mara slowly turned toward her.

May you like

Celeste’s face collapsed.

CUT.
