Chapter 2 - Eleven Years Ago

Ethan locked the security room behind them.
Only Julian, Mara, Celeste, and Ethan remained.
Celeste folded her arms.
“This is absurd.”
Mara said nothing.
Ethan opened the off-site backup console.
The missing corridor segment began rebuilding.
Julian watched the progress bar.
“Tell me about the old theft.”
Mara looked at Celeste.
She stared at the screen.
Eleven years fell away fast.
“Client shoot at Pier 59.”
Julian nodded once.
“Vale Foundation sponsored it.”
His head turned.
“What?”
Celeste closed her eyes.
Mara continued.
“A jewelry campaign tied to one of your charity galas.”
“What went missing?”
“Vintage diamond necklace.”
“Found where?”
“My equipment bag.”
Julian looked at Celeste.
She snapped, “There were thirty people on that set.”
Mara said, “Only one had access to my bag after wardrobe.”
“You cannot prove that.”
“I couldn’t then.”
Celeste’s mouth twitched.
Julian caught it.
“What happened to Mara afterward?”
Celeste said nothing.
Mara answered.
“Agency suspended me. Clients disappeared. Someone leaked that I had a prescription-drug problem.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Police?”
“The client refused charges if I returned the necklace.”
Celeste laughed.
“How generous.”
Mara turned.
“You sound exactly like you did then.”
Ethan’s fingers moved across the keyboard.
The progress bar hit seventy-eight percent.
Julian asked, “What happened to your career?”
Mara looked down at her hands.
“Gone.”
She did not tell him about the apartment she lost.
The months Elena worked double shifts.
Sophie being thirteen and pretending not to notice they were eating cereal for dinner.
Not yet.
Ethan said, “Recovered.”
The room went silent.
Video loaded.
7:11 p.m.
Mara entered the staff corridor carrying folded linens.
She walked out two minutes later.
7:15.
Celeste appeared.
Alone.
She looked behind her.
Opened the master-key cabinet.
Removed a key.
Mara heard Celeste stop breathing.
Julian did not move.
The video continued.
Celeste opened Mara’s locker.
Placed something inside.
Closed it.
Returned the key.
7:17.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
7:18.
Image disappeared.
Julian turned.
Celeste’s face had gone white.
“That is not what it looks like.”
Mara almost laughed.
Julian’s voice stayed low.
“Tell me what it looks like.”
“I was checking something.”
“With my grandmother’s bracelet?”
Celeste looked at him.
“I panicked.”
“Why?”
“She was hiding her face.”
“You made her.”
“That is her claim.”
Ethan paused the video.
“More footage.”
A second camera angle.
Mara alone near the pantry.
She pulled off the scarf.
Pressed both hands to her cheeks.
Then leaned down to pick up a dropped napkin.
The chain around her neck slipped outside her collar.
Silver locket.
Small oval.
Dented near the hinge.
Julian stood so fast his chair hit the wall.
“Stop.”
Ethan froze the frame.
Julian stepped closer.
His face lost color.
Mara instinctively covered the locket.
“What?”
Julian pointed.
“Zoom.”
Ethan enlarged the image.
The locket filled the screen.
Julian whispered, “No.”
Mara stared.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“Where did you get that?”
“My mother.”
“No.”
His voice cracked.
Mara’s pulse jumped.
Julian stepped toward her.
“That locket belonged to Margaret Vale.”
“Who?”
“My aunt.”
Celeste backed toward the door.
Julian saw her.
“Stay.”
Mara unclasped the necklace.
Her fingers shook.
“My mother said it belonged to her mother.”
Julian looked at the tiny dent near the hinge.
Then at Mara’s eyes.
“I saw that dent in photographs when I was a child.”
Mara whispered, “Your aunt was my grandmother?”
Celeste grabbed the doorknob.
Ethan blocked her.
Julian looked at the frozen video again.
Then at Celeste.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“You knew what that was.”
“No.”
Mara stepped closer.
“Then why did you make me hide my face?”
Celeste’s lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Julian said, “Answer her.”
Celeste stared at Mara’s locket.
Then whispered:
May you like
“Because Graham told me if anyone in this family ever saw it, we were all finished.”
CUT.
