Chapter 1 - Take Off the Scarf

Mara’s fingers went to the knot behind her head.
Celeste spoke first.
“It was my suggestion.”
Julian did not look away from Mara.
“I asked her.”
Celeste smiled too quickly.
“The fabric is part of the service look tonight.”
Mara stared at her.
“That is not what you said.”
Forty conversations died at once.
Celeste’s smile hardened.
Julian leaned back in his chair.
“What did she say?”
Mara could feel every guest watching.
She could also feel the tuition deadline in her pocket like a physical weight.
Twelve days.
Sophie’s future.
One sentence from Mara could cost all of it.
Celeste stepped closer.
“Mara is tired. She has been working since four.”
A little girl at the far end of the table raised her hand.
The same child who had said Mara was not hiding yesterday.
“I saw Miss Celeste go where the maids keep their coats.”
Her mother pulled the girl’s hand down.
“Ella.”
“But I did.”
Celeste’s eyes flashed.
Then she touched her wrist.
Her face changed.
“My bracelet.”
Julian’s attention shifted.
“What?”
“My grandmother’s bracelet.”
Celeste looked around the table.
The diamonds at her throat trembled with her breathing.
“I had it before dinner.”
She opened her evening bag.
Nothing.
Checked beneath her napkin.
Nothing.
Then she looked at Mara.
Too fast.
Mara saw it.
So did Julian.
Celeste whispered, “Oh my God.”
Mara’s stomach dropped.
“No.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Julian stood.
“Security.”
A man near the ballroom doors touched his earpiece.
Ethan Ward.
Julian’s security chief.
Gray at the temples, square shoulders, quiet voice.
Mara had worked in the house six months and had never seen him rush.
He still did not rush.
“What is missing?”
Celeste described the bracelet.
Antique platinum.
Old-cut diamonds.
Vale family piece.
Julian said, “Search the public rooms.”
Celeste shook her head.
“And staff areas.”
Mara looked at her.
“There it is.”
Celeste’s face sharpened.
“What?”
“You’re doing it again.”
Julian turned.
“Again?”
Mara pulled the scarf loose.
Air hit her face.
Celeste went pale.
Not because Mara had disobeyed.
Because several older guests stared longer now.
One woman near the fireplace narrowed her eyes.
Recognition almost formed.
Celeste snapped, “Put that back on.”
“No.”
Julian said, “Nobody is covering her face.”
Celeste looked at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“No. I don’t.”
Ethan returned ten minutes later.
He held a velvet evidence pouch.
Mara’s knees weakened before he spoke.
“Found in staff locker twelve.”
Hers.
Celeste covered her mouth.
Mara laughed once.
A broken sound.
“Of course.”
Julian looked at Ethan.
“Opened how?”
“Master key.”
Mara said, “I don’t have a key to the master cabinet.”
Ethan nodded.
“I know.”
Celeste turned to Julian.
“She covered her face. She has expensive jewelry in her locker. What more do you need?”
Mara looked at her.
“Eleven years ago, you said almost the same thing.”
The room went still.
Celeste stopped breathing.
Julian looked between them.
“What happened eleven years ago?”
Mara stepped closer to the table.
“A necklace disappeared during a shoot.”
Celeste whispered, “Don’t.”
“It was found in my bag.”
“Mara.”
“My agency dropped me before sunset.”
Celeste’s voice rose.
“You were unstable.”
Mara laughed.
“You planted it.”
Celeste stared.
Julian’s face changed.
He turned to Ethan.
“Pull every camera covering the staff corridor.”
Ethan hesitated.
Only half a second.
Julian caught it.
“What?”
“One segment is missing.”
Celeste’s shoulders loosened.
Mara saw that too.
Julian did not raise his voice.
“Missing how?”
“Deleted at 7:18.”
“Can you restore it?”
Ethan looked at Celeste.
Then back at Julian.
“Yes.”
Celeste stepped forward.
“Julian, this is humiliating.”
He stared at her.
“For who?”
She stopped.
Julian pointed toward the security room.
“Restore it.”
Celeste’s face emptied.
Mara touched the silver locket beneath her uniform.
For the first time all night, Celeste looked not angry.
May you like
Terrified.
CUT.
