Chapter 7 - The Unseen Partner

I took the phone from Daniel’s trembling hand.
It was a text message from an unregistered encrypted number sent to Daniel's private line:
“Vanessa was just a distraction, Daniel. Your father’s debts in Europe weren’t settled when he died. Check the offshore accounts in Liechtenstein before your mother loses everything.”
My heart stopped in my chest.
My husband, Richard Whitmore, had passed away sixteen years ago.
He was a man of absolute integrity, who had built our family business on honesty and hard work.
Or so I had believed for thirty years.
"What does this mean?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling.
"Is this another one of Vanessa’s mind games?"
"No," I murmured, my mind racing as cold fear gripped my stomach.
"Vanessa doesn't know anything about Liechtenstein."
"Only three people in the world knew about those legacy accounts."
"Your father, myself... and your uncle Julian."
Julian Whitmore was Richard’s younger brother.
He had vanished from our lives fifteen years ago after a bitter dispute over the company board seats.
We had assumed he moved to South America and severed all ties.
I walked over to my desk and pulled out a key to the heavy brass safe mounted inside the wall.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Daniel asked, following me closely.
I opened the safe door and pulled out a faded leather ledger that belonged to my late husband.
I flipped to the very last page.
A small, handwritten note was tucked into the binding.
It was in Julian’s handwriting, dated the week after my husband’s funeral:
