Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

Two months passed.

The autumn leaves turned rich shades of red and gold across the estate grounds.

The federal trial against Julian Whitmore made national headlines before ending in a swift conviction for corporate fraud, identity theft, and extortion.

Vanessa Sterling—or Jenkins—was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay restitution for her past financial crimes after her ties to Julian were fully exposed in court.

The Whitmore Global Foundation emerged stronger than ever, its reputation restored and its charitable reach expanded under Daniel's new leadership.

Daniel had grown immensely over those two months.

The painful lesson had not made him cold or cynical, but it had given him wisdom.

He ran the family business with a sharp eye and a firm hand, just as his father had done.

One afternoon, Daniel and I sat in the grand library, finalizing the new trust agreements.

"Mom, I signed the updated bylaws," Daniel said, handing me the leather-bound document.

"No single person can alter the trust holdings without unanimous board approval, including my future spouse—whoever she may be."

I took the pen and signed my name on the final line with a sense of deep, permanent peace.

"Smart man," I smiled, looking up at him.

"So, what are your plans for this evening?"

"I'm having dinner with an old friend from university," Daniel said, a faint, genuine blush touching his cheeks.

"Her name is Clara."

"She runs an environmental non-profit in the city."

"She wears sneakers to work, hates fancy galas, and told me yesterday that my suit was too expensive."

I let out a warm, joyful laugh that echoed off the high oak bookshelves.

"She sounds wonderful, Daniel," I said, my heart feeling lighter than it had in years.

"Bring her home for Sunday tea whenever you're ready."

"I promise I won't wear a wig."
