Chapter 10 - Cornered

"Look at him," I whispered to Daniel, gesturing subtly toward the driveway.

Daniel looked out the window, his jaw clenching as he recognized his uncle’s face for the first time in fifteen years.

"He framed us," Daniel said through gritted teeth.

"He used Vanessa to get close, and when that failed, he dropped the fake whistleblowing documents directly to the federal government."

Agent Vance walked back into the foyer, carrying my late husband's leather ledger in a clear plastic evidence bag.

"Mrs. Whitmore, this ledger contains direct records of unverified foreign transfers dating back fifteen years," Vance stated coldly.

"You will need to come down to the federal building for questioning."

"She isn't going anywhere without our legal counsel present!" Daniel shouted, stepping firmly between Vance and me.

"Daniel, calm down," I ordered softly, placing a reassuring hand on his forearm.

"Agent Vance is doing his job based on fabricated evidence."

I looked Vance straight in the eye.

"Agent Vance, before you take me anywhere, I suggest you turn to page forty-two of that ledger."

Vance frowned, but opened the evidence bag and flipped the yellowed pages carefully.

On page forty-two was an official, notarized document bearing the seal of the International Financial Court.

"That document proves that those European accounts were legally closed and fully audited sixteen years ago," I explained calmly.

"And it bears the sole signature of the man who actually managed them..."

"Julian Whitmore."
