Chapter 17 - The Ghost’s Ledger

My fingers trembled slightly as I touched the worn leather cover of the diary.
August 1998 was the year before my husband Richard died.
It was the year our business faced its greatest financial crisis, almost going bankrupt before suddenly recovering six months later.
I turned the fragile pages carefully until I reached the entries for August 1998.
The handwriting inside was not Julian’s.
It was Richard’s.
My breath caught in my throat as I recognized my late husband's neat, elegant script:
> August 14, 1998
> The board has betrayed us. Julian discovered that our primary investor, Arthur Sterling Sr., manipulated our stock prices to force a hostile takeover.
> I had no choice.
> To protect Eleanor and young Daniel from absolute ruin, I created the European holdings to hide fifty percent of our assets from Sterling’s reach.
> If anything happens to me, Julian knows what to do.
> I only hope Eleanor never has to bear the burden of knowing how close we came to losing everything.
Tears welled in my eyes as I read Richard's words.
All these years, I had believed Julian was the sole villain who had tried to destroy my husband's legacy.
In reality, Richard and Julian had worked together in secret twenty-eight years ago to save our family from an even greater predator—the Sterling family.
Vanessa Sterling had not just been an opportunistic social climber or Julian's puppet.
She was Arthur Sterling Sr.'s granddaughter.
Her infiltration of our home had been a generational vendetta to reclaim the assets Richard had hidden from her family decades ago.

Julian had turned against us years later out of bitterness, but in the end, he was returning the key to the truth.
