Chapter 18 - The Vault at First National

The next morning, I drove to the historic First National Bank in downtown Boston, accompanied by Daniel.
We were escorted down to the high-security underground vault by the senior bank manager.
The gold key from Julian’s package turned smoothly in the heavy brass lock of Safety Deposit Box #408.
The manager pulled the long metal box out and left us alone in the private viewing room.
Daniel lifted the lid carefully.
Inside the box lay three items:
First, a set of original land deeds to a pristine three-hundred-acre coastal estate in Maine, registered under Daniel’s name.
Second, a collection of personal letters written by Richard to Daniel, meant to be opened on his wedding day.
And third, a small gold pocket watch—the exact watch my husband had worn on the day we were married.
Daniel picked up the pocket watch, his hands shaking as he held his father's memory in his palm.
He opened the casing.
Inside was a tiny black-and-white photograph of me as a young woman, smiling in the summer sun.
Engraved on the silver lining were five simple words:
“To my Eleanor. Love is our true fortress.”
Daniel looked up at me, tears glistening in his eyes.
"Dad loved you so much, Mom," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"He sacrificed everything to protect us."
I wiped a warm tear from my cheek and reached out to press my hand over Daniel’s on top of the watch.
"He did, my son," I said softly.
May you like
"And now his protection is finally complete."
