Chapter 7: The Man He Trusted

The next morning, Lucas called David like nothing was wrong. He put him on speaker so we could all listen.
“Lucas?” David said, sounding shocked—too shocked. “This is impossible. Everyone said you were gone.”
“I need to know who told them where I was,” Lucas said flatly. “And don’t lie to me.”
Silence stretched long across the line. Then David’s voice dropped cold. “You were always too soft, Lucas. Too busy playing the good guy while I did all the dirty work. You owed them ten million. I made a deal.”
“You sold me out for money?” Lucas asked, his voice shaking with rage.
“I sold you out for what I was owed,” David snapped. “Your family took everything from mine. This was just payback. They’re coming for the cabin right now. There’s nowhere left to run.”
The line went dead.
Lucas grabbed his gun from the table and checked the magazine. “We have twenty minutes if we’re lucky.”
“Fifteen,” Jude said, already shoving supplies into a backpack. “They know the roads better than we do.”
Ethan walked in holding three small USB drives. “I copied everything from Dad’s office before the funeral. All the emails, all the transfers, all the files David hid.”
Lucas stared at his son. “When did you…”
“You taught me to always keep a backup,” Ethan said simply.
