Chapter 23: The Letter

It was short, no excuses, no anger.
*I’m sorry,* it read. I let hate blind me. I thought taking from you would fix what your father took from mine. It only broke me more. Tell the boy… tell him not to carry my mistakes.
Lucas burned it in the kitchen sink. “He’s right about one thing. We don’t carry anyone else’s choices but our own.”
We didn’t answer. We didn’t send anything back. But we made sure his family was taken care of—quietly, without fanfare.
“Justice isn’t revenge,” Jude said. “It’s just… making sure no one else gets hurt.”
