CHAPTER 4: THE THREAT

Two days later, Grace received a visitor.
She was in her small apartment, filling out job applications, when someone knocked on her door.
She opened it to find a man in a dark suit. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with a cold smile and dead eyes.
"Grace Miller?" he asked.
"Yes?"
"Miss Whitmore would like to speak with you."
Grace's blood went cold.
"I'm busy."
"This isn't a request."
Grace tried to close the door, but he pushed it open easily.
"You don't understand what you've done," he said. "Miss Whitmore doesn't like being embarrassed. And you embarrassed her in front of half of Chicago."
"I was protecting someone."
"Miss Whitmore doesn't care about that."
He pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to her.
"Read it."
Grace looked down.
It was a letter.
It said that Vivian Whitmore was going to destroy her. Her credit. Her reputation. Her ability to find work anywhere in the city. Everything.
Unless Grace agreed to apologize publicly at the next charity gala.
And beg for forgiveness.
"Miss Whitmore expects your answer by tomorrow," the man said.
He walked away.
Grace stood in her doorway, shaking.
She had no money. No job. And now a powerful woman was threatening to destroy her life.
What was she going to do?
She looked down at her phone.
Her thumb hovered over the number on Dominic's card.
She didn't want to call him.
May you like
But she didn't have a choice.
She made the call.
