CHAPTER 3: THE FALL

The next morning, Grace was fired.

Her manager called her into his office and told her that Vivian Whitmore had made several calls. The catering company had been blacklisted from every major event in the city. And Grace was being terminated immediately.

"I'm sorry, Grace," her manager said. "But I have no choice."

"I understand."

She packed her things and walked out of the building.

For the first time in years, Grace had no job.

She sat on a park bench and stared at the lake, trying to figure out what to do next. She had a few hundred dollars in savings. Rent was due in two weeks. And the job market was brutal.

She pulled out Dominic's card and looked at it.

Call that number, he had said. Anything at all.

Should she call?

What would she even say?

"I saved your mother, and now I need a job?"

She couldn't do it.

She wasn't the kind of person who asked for handouts.

She put the card back in her pocket and started walking.

She would figure it out.

She always did.

But as she walked away, she didn't notice the black sedan parked across the street.

And she didn't notice the man inside, watching her with cold, calculating eyes.

Vivian Whitmore hadn't finished with her.
