Chapter 8 - THE FILE CALLED AFTER

The laptop in Unit 418 did not contain a single dramatic confession.
It contained something worse.
Planning.
Schedules.
Draft emails.
Scanned documents.
Lists.
Olivia had created folders for every stage of a future life.
BEFORE.
SEPARATION.
HEARING.
AFTER.
Daniel stood behind the forensic analyst as the folders opened one by one.
Inside HEARING were edited photographs of Olivia's old bruises.
Draft statements attributed to Ethan.
A list of incidents that had never happened.
One entry claimed Daniel had smashed a plate near Ethan during an argument.
Daniel remembered the real event.
Olivia had dropped the plate while unloading the dishwasher.
They had both laughed.
In AFTER, the tone changed.
A new school for Ethan two states away.
A furnished apartment leased through Northbridge Consulting.
A budget showing three million dollars from Daniel's life insurance.
A second line labeled EVELYN ESTATE - ESTIMATED.
Daniel stared.
"She expected my mother to die too."
Cole did not answer.
They opened a document titled TIMING.
June crash - unsuccessful.
Custody filing - prepare.
Evelyn - control narrative.
Insurance - verify active.
Daniel felt his jaw clench.
No poetry.
No dramatic villain speech.
Just bullet points about his life.
That made it more horrifying.
Then the analyst found a deleted folder.
Recovered name:
ETHAN TRUST.
Inside were transfer receipts.
Daniel recognized the account number immediately.
His father had opened the education fund the week Ethan was born.
Balance six months earlier: $184,220.
Current balance: $6,412.
Daniel sat down.
"She took his college money."
Cole looked at the transfers.
"Most went to Northbridge."
"So she funded this with Ethan's money."
Luke stood near the door, silent.
Daniel looked at him.
"And yours."
Luke nodded miserably.
The analyst clicked another file.
A scanned passport application for Ethan.
The second parent authorization bore Daniel's signature.
Fake.
Travel destination:
Costa Rica.
Departure date:
Nine days from now.
Daniel looked at Cole.
"She was going to take him."
"Looks that way."
"After what? After I was dead?"
Cole pointed toward the whiteboard.
"Or after you were arrested for domestic violence. Either outcome separated you from Ethan."
The analyst raised a hand.
"There's one more thing."
He opened a text file recovered from the trash.
It contained a single paragraph.
IF ETHAN TALKS TO DANIEL FIRST, MOVE DATE FORWARD. EVELYN MAY INTERFERE. DO NOT LET THEM SPEAK ALONE.
Daniel stared at the screen.
That explained why Olivia had panicked at the staircase.
Evelyn had not just found the papers.
She had threatened to get Ethan alone with Daniel that night.
Cole's phone buzzed.
She checked it.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"Olivia's attorney filed for emergency custody an hour ago."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
"After all this?"
"The judge hasn't seen all this yet."
Cole's expression hardened.
May you like
"And Olivia is claiming you coached Ethan after the fall."
