Chapter 10 - THE MONEY IN ETHAN'S NAME

Evelyn waited until Ethan left with Mark before speaking.

"Your father left more than the education account."

Daniel frowned.

"I know about the life insurance he left you."

"Not that."

She reached into her purse and removed a small brass key.

"A safe deposit box."

Daniel stared.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it wasn't mine to open unless something happened to me."

At the bank, Evelyn produced documents Daniel had never seen.

His father had created a small trust for Ethan.

Not huge.

But significant.

Four hundred thousand dollars, invested until Ethan turned twenty-five.

Daniel read the trustee line.

DANIEL CARTER AND EVELYN CARTER, CO-TRUSTEES.

"Olivia wasn't a trustee."

"No."

"Then how could she steal from it?"

Evelyn placed another paper beside it.

A resignation form.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

Fake.

A second document named a replacement trustee.

Northbridge Consulting.

Daniel swore under his breath.

"Did Dad know that company?"

"It didn't exist when he died."

The bank had rejected the change because Evelyn never signed her half.

That was the missing piece.

Olivia needed Evelyn's signature.

Not just silence.

"She asked me to sign papers last month," Evelyn said. "Said they were updated school-beneficiary forms. I refused to sign without reading them."

"And then?"

"She started telling you I was becoming forgetful."

Daniel remembered.

Olivia had suggested Evelyn stop driving.

Suggested she see a neurologist.

Suggested maybe she shouldn't be alone with Ethan for long periods.

At the time, it had sounded caring.

Now it sounded like groundwork.

"The pills," Daniel said.

Evelyn nodded.

"If I looked confused enough, she could argue I wasn't competent to manage the trust."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The plan was not one crime.

It was a staircase.

Each step supported the next.

Make Evelyn look impaired.

Make Daniel look violent.

Use Ethan as a witness.

Take control of both accounts.

Get Daniel out of the picture.

Leave with Ethan.

The bank officer returned with transaction logs.

"Mr. Carter, there's something else you should see."

She pointed toward multiple failed login attempts on the trust portal.

All from Daniel's home.

Then one successful login.

Three days before Evelyn fell.

"How?"

The officer tapped the authentication record.

"Your mother's security question was answered correctly."

Evelyn stared.

"Nobody knows that answer."

Daniel looked at her.

"What was the question?"

The officer read it.

What was the name of your first dog?

Evelyn whispered, "Charlie."

Daniel knew the name.

So did Olivia.

But someone else knew too.

Ethan.

Daniel's stomach dropped.

"Mom... did Olivia ever ask Ethan questions about Grandma?"

Evelyn's face changed.

At that exact moment, Ethan called Daniel from Mark's phone.

"Dad?"

"Hey, buddy."

"I remembered something."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Tell me."

"Mom made a quiz about Grandma."

"What kind of quiz?"

"Her old house. Her first pet. Grandpa's middle name. Stuff like that."

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Ethan continued.

"She said it was for Grandma's birthday."

Then the boy added quietly:

May you like

"Dad... I gave her all the answers."
