Chapter 5 - THE POLICY

Daniel had spent three months calling the June crash bad luck.
Now he requested the hospital records.
The emergency physician had documented unexplained sedation.
Daniel read the note three times.
PATIENT DENIES ALCOHOL OR RECREATIONAL DRUG USE. PRESENTATION INCONSISTENT WITH REPORTED SLEEP DEPRIVATION ALONE.
No toxicology panel beyond alcohol had been ordered.
The crash had happened less than a mile from a concrete bridge support.
Daniel sat in the hospital cafeteria staring at the page until Detective Cole took the chair across from him.
"We can't turn suspicion into proof," she said.
"I know."
"But we can test your mother now."
They already had.
At 2:13 a.m., the result came back.
Evelyn had a sedative in her bloodstream that she had never been prescribed.
Cole's expression changed.
"This is enough for another search warrant request."
"For the house?"
"And Olivia's vehicle."
Daniel looked through the cafeteria window into darkness.
"Where is she?"
"At her sister's house. We told her not to contact Ethan."
"You didn't arrest her?"
Cole's jaw tightened.
"Not yet. Your son's statement is strong. Your mother was unconscious. Olivia says Evelyn lost balance during an argument and Ethan misunderstood what he saw."
Daniel laughed without humor.
"She coached my son to lie about me."
"Which helps establish a pattern. It doesn't automatically prove attempted murder."
That answer was frustrating because it was true.
At 8:00 the next morning, Daniel called the insurance company named on Luke's documents.
He expected to learn the application had never been submitted.
He was wrong.
A representative confirmed there was an active policy.
Three million dollars.
Issued four months earlier.
"Beneficiary?" Daniel asked.
The representative hesitated.
"Your spouse. Olivia Carter."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I never signed that application."
Silence.
"Mr. Carter, I'm transferring you to our fraud division."
By noon, an investigator joined Cole.
The digital application had come from Daniel's home IP address.
His signature had been electronic.
A copy of his driver's license had been attached.
Olivia had access to all of it.
There was one more document.
A health questionnaire.
Daniel read the answer beside HIGH-RISK OCCUPATION.
NO.
Beside RECENT LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS.
NO.
The application had been submitted two weeks before his crash.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Cole saw the date.
"Okay," she said quietly. "Now I'm interested in June."
Then her phone rang.
She listened for less than thirty seconds.
"We're moving."
"What happened?"
"The search team found medication in your house."
Daniel stood.
"Where?"
Cole looked at him.
"Not in Olivia's things."
She paused.
May you like
"In Ethan's bathroom."
