Chapter 11 - THE CLOCK ON THE MANTEL

Daniel found Ethan sitting on Mark's couch with his knees pulled to his chest.

"I helped her steal Grandma's money."

Daniel sat beside him.

"No, you didn't."

"I gave her the answers."

"Because your mother lied to you about why she wanted them."

"But I still did it."

Daniel turned Ethan gently toward him.

"Someone using your trust does not make their choices yours. Understand?"

Ethan's eyes filled.

"Grandma almost died."

"And that is not because of you either."

Daniel held him until the boy's breathing slowed.

Then Ethan said something unexpected.

"Grandma knew Mom was being weird before the blue folder."

"How?"

"She bought a camera."

Daniel pulled back.

"What camera?"

"The clock."

"What clock?"

"The old clock in the living room. Grandma said Mom kept going through her purse when she visited."

Daniel stared.

There was an antique mantel clock on the bookshelf near the staircase.

Evelyn had given it to them two months earlier.

Daniel had assumed it was another old family object she wanted out of her house.

He called Cole.

Police returned to the house.

The clock looked ordinary until a forensic technician removed the rear panel.

Inside was a miniature camera.

"Battery powered," the tech said. "Motion activated. Local memory card."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"You installed a camera in my house?"

Evelyn looked embarrassed.

"I thought Olivia was taking things from my purse. I was going to tell you once I had proof."

"Did you check the footage?"

"Only once. I saw her looking through my wallet. Then I got scared she'd notice if I kept removing the card."

Cole took the clock.

"If the card still has data, this could matter."

It mattered more than any of them expected.

The first useful clip showed Olivia standing alone near Evelyn's tea.

She looked toward the hallway.

Then squeezed drops from a small bottle into the cup.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Daniel felt sick.

The next clip showed Olivia opening Evelyn's purse and photographing a bank card.

Another showed Olivia asking Ethan questions from the "birthday quiz."

Another showed Luke entering through the garage.

Daniel looked at him.

Luke lowered his eyes.

"I told you I came over."

"You didn't tell me you met her while Ethan was home."

Luke said nothing.

Then the technician stopped the playback.

"There's a file from the day of the fall."

Nobody moved.

The video began at 4:41 p.m.

Evelyn entered the living room carrying the blue folder.

Olivia followed.

Their argument was clear.

"You are telling Daniel tonight," Evelyn said.

"No."

"Then I am."

"You have no idea what you're ruining."

"I know exactly what I'm saving."

Evelyn turned toward the staircase.

Olivia reached for her arm.

The view shifted because of motion blur.

Daniel leaned forward.

Then the camera froze.

File corrupted.

Cole cursed softly.

Daniel stared at the frozen frame.

They had everything up to the second before the push.

Everything except the push itself.

Then the technician said:

"Wait."

He zoomed into the edge of the image.

A reflection appeared in the glass cabinet beside the stairs.

Two figures.

One arm extended.

One body falling.

The camera had missed the staircase.

May you like

The reflection had not.
