Chapter 1 - THE BLUE FOLDER

Daniel rode in the ambulance with his mother while Ethan sat across from him wrapped in a gray emergency blanket.
The boy had stopped crying.
That scared Daniel more than the tears had.
Eight-year-old Ethan normally filled silence with questions. Now he stared at the floor while the paramedic checked Evelyn's blood pressure.
Olivia had been kept at the house.
Not arrested.
Not yet.
A patrol officer had separated her from Ethan and told her not to leave while detectives photographed the staircase.
Olivia's last words followed Daniel all the way to the hospital.
"He's confused. He didn't see what he thinks he saw."
Daniel looked at his son.
"Ethan."
The boy's eyes lifted.
"You don't have to tell me anything right now."
Ethan swallowed.
"Mom told Grandma she had until tonight."
Daniel felt the ambulance tilt beneath him even though it had not turned.
"Until tonight for what?"
"I don't know. Grandma said she wouldn't lie for her anymore."
On the stretcher, Evelyn moved.
Her eyelids fluttered.
"Mom?"
Daniel leaned close.
Evelyn's lips barely moved.
"Blue folder."
"What?"
"Ethan's room."
Her eyes opened for half a second.
"Don't let her take him."
Then the monitor alarm changed and the paramedic pushed Daniel back.
At the hospital, Evelyn disappeared behind swinging trauma-room doors.
Daniel called his neighbor, Mark Ellis, a retired firefighter who had known the family for years.
"I need you to go into my house with the officer who's still there," Daniel said. "Ethan's room. Look for a blue folder."
Twenty minutes later, Mark called back.
"Found it."
"What's inside?"
A pause.
"Daniel... you need to see this yourself."
"Read me the first page."
Paper shifted on the other end.
Mark's voice changed.
"Petition for emergency temporary custody."
Daniel stood from the hospital chair.
"Custody of Ethan?"
"Yes."
"Filed by who?"
Another pause.
"Olivia."
Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.
"On what grounds?"
Mark exhaled.
"Domestic violence. Alcohol abuse. Unstable behavior after work stress."
Daniel almost laughed because the claims were so absurd.
Then Mark read the next line.
"She lists Ethan as a witness."
Daniel slowly turned toward his son.
Ethan had heard.
His face went white.
"Dad..."
Daniel crouched.
"What?"
The boy whispered, "That's the story Mom made me practice."
Daniel did not speak.
"What story?"
Ethan's lower lip trembled.
"The one where I say you hurt her."
And suddenly the fall down the stairs was no longer the beginning of Daniel's nightmare.

It was the moment the plan started breaking.
