Chapter 12 - THE STAIRCASE FROM ANOTHER ANGLE

The reflection was not perfect.

It did not need to be.

Frame by frame, the sequence became clear.

Evelyn reached the first stair.

Olivia grabbed the folder.

Evelyn pulled it back.

Olivia shoved with both hands.

Evelyn disappeared from the reflection.

Then came the sound.

A crash.

The folder hitting the floor.

Ethan screaming upstairs.

Olivia stood motionless for four seconds.

Four full seconds.

Then she moved.

Not toward Evelyn.

Toward the papers.

She gathered them.

Stuffed several into the waistband of her skirt.

Only after that did she kneel beside Evelyn.

Daniel could barely breathe.

Then his own voice came from off-camera.

"Mom? Olivia?"

Olivia instantly changed.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her voice cracked.

"Daniel! She fell!"

The performance began before he entered the room.

Cole stopped the video.

"That's enough for me."

Olivia was arrested that afternoon.

This time, she was not leaving with her sister.

Daniel expected relief.

He felt something closer to exhaustion.

At the station, Olivia requested to speak with him.

Cole advised against it.

Daniel agreed.

Then Olivia made another request.

"She wants to speak with Evelyn."

Evelyn laughed once.

"Absolutely not."

An hour later, Olivia changed tactics.

She offered information in exchange for her attorney discussing a plea.

Cole called Daniel because part of that information involved him.

"She says Northbridge wasn't created by her."

Daniel frowned.

"Luke said he sent money there because Olivia told him to."

"Correct."

"Then who created it?"

Cole slid incorporation records across the interview-room table.

The company existed before Olivia's first transfer.

Its registered agent was a man named Peter Graves.

Daniel did not recognize the name.

Luke did.

When Cole showed him the photograph, Luke went completely still.

"That's Olivia's therapist."

Daniel stared.

"Her therapist?"

"Dr. Graves. She started seeing him last year."

Cole's eyes narrowed.

"He's not a licensed therapist."

They searched deeper.

Peter Graves was a former private investigator with a fraud conviction from twelve years earlier.

He had rented Unit 418.

He had formed Northbridge.

He had helped prepare the false custody materials.

Daniel felt anger rise again.

"So she had help."

Cole shook her head.

"Yes, but don't misunderstand the evidence. She wasn't manipulated into pushing your mother. The video is clear."

"Then why Graves?"

Cole looked at the recovered messages.

"Because Olivia wanted a plan she believed couldn't fail."

Peter Graves was arrested the next morning at a motel near the airport.

Inside his room, police found forged identity documents, blank prescription pads, and copies of Daniel's financial records.

But one discovery changed the case again.

A prepaid phone contained messages from Olivia.

The final one had been sent twenty minutes before Evelyn fell.

OLIVIA: SHE'S GOING TO TELL HIM TONIGHT.

GRAVES: THEN YOU KNOW WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN.

OLIVIA: I CAN'T DO THAT.

GRAVES: YOU ALREADY TRIED ONCE.

Daniel read the last line twice.

June.

The crash.

Olivia had not merely abandoned him while sedated.

May you like

According to Graves, that had been the first attempt.
