Chapter 4 - THE TEST LUKE NEVER EXPECTED

By midnight, Luke had become a witness instead of a suspect.
That did not make Daniel forgive him.
It only changed where the anger belonged.
Cole collected Luke's messages and the unsigned insurance forms. Then she drove Daniel back to the hospital.
Evelyn was awake.
Bruised.
Stitched above one eyebrow.
One wrist fractured.
But awake.
Daniel entered alone.
His mother looked at him and immediately started crying.
"I'm sorry."
Daniel pulled a chair beside the bed.
"For what?"
"I should have told you sooner."
"Told me what?"
Evelyn looked toward the door.
"Is Ethan safe?"
"He's with Mark and Detective Cole. Olivia can't get near him tonight."
Only then did Evelyn breathe normally.
"I found the papers three weeks ago."
"The custody petition?"
"That. Bank statements. Insurance forms. Copies of your signature."
Daniel felt his pulse rise.
"Where?"
"Her desk. She asked me to find Ethan's birth certificate while she was out."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she walked in before I could photograph everything."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"And because she convinced me I was misunderstanding what I saw."
"Mom."
"I know."
Her voice cracked.
"I wanted to believe the marriage was fine. I wanted Ethan to have both parents. I told myself there had to be an explanation."
Daniel looked down.
That was how silence survived in families.
Not because everybody was cruel.
Sometimes because people wanted normal so badly they helped protect the thing destroying it.
Evelyn continued.
"Then money disappeared from Ethan's account."
Daniel's head snapped up.
"What account?"
"The education account your father opened before he died."
Daniel went still.
He had not checked that account in months.
"How much?"
"I don't know. But the statement I saw had transfers I didn't recognize."
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"Is that what you confronted her about?"
"Partly."
"What else?"
Evelyn looked directly at him.
"The pills."
Daniel frowned.
"What pills?"
"She'd been putting something in my tea."
Daniel stared.
"How do you know?"
"Because I stopped drinking it."
"What happened?"
"The dizziness stopped. The confusion stopped. I stopped falling asleep in the afternoon."
Daniel stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
Evelyn caught his hand.
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
"She didn't start with me."
"What does that mean?"
Evelyn's voice dropped.
"Remember your car accident in June?"
Daniel's skin went cold.
He remembered rain.
A highway barrier.
Waking up in the emergency room with no memory of the twenty minutes before impact.
Doctors had blamed exhaustion.
Evelyn squeezed his fingers.
May you like
"That night, Olivia made your coffee before you left."
