Chapter 13 - WHAT OLIVIA FINALLY SAID

Olivia denied trying to kill Daniel in June.

For twelve hours.

Then investigators showed her the storage-facility video.

They showed her the insurance application.

They showed her the toll records.

They showed her Peter Graves's messages.

The story changed.

"I wanted him scared," she said.

Cole sat across from her.

"You drugged him."

"Peter told me the dose wasn't dangerous."

"You put him behind the wheel."

"He was supposed to wake up before the car moved."

"You left him on a roadside turnout."

Olivia started crying.

"I wasn't thinking."

Cole leaned forward.

"You were thinking enough to disable the vehicle tracker."

Silence.

"You were thinking enough to buy a life insurance policy two weeks earlier."

Olivia's crying stopped.

The interview recording later became the ugliest thing Daniel ever watched.

Not because Olivia confessed cleanly.

She didn't.

She minimized.

Adjusted.

Blamed.

She said Peter suggested the insurance.

Peter suggested the custody strategy.

Luke made her feel like escape was possible.

Evelyn judged her.

Daniel worked too much.

Money made her anxious.

Motherhood made her feel trapped.

Every explanation had the same missing piece.

Choice.

Nobody forced her to coach Ethan.

Nobody forced her to steal from his account.

Nobody forced her to put sedatives in Evelyn's tea.

Nobody forced her hands onto Evelyn's back.

Finally Cole asked the simplest question.

"Why did you push her?"

Olivia stared at the table for almost a minute.

Then she answered.

"Because she looked at me like she knew exactly who I was."

Cole said nothing.

Olivia continued.

"She wasn't scared of me anymore."

That was it.

Not money.

Not Peter.

Not Daniel.

Control.

Evelyn had stopped cooperating with Olivia's version of reality.

And Olivia had panicked.

The plea negotiations took weeks.

Peter Graves decided to cooperate when prosecutors showed him the video evidence.

Luke turned over every message and financial record he had.

The insurance company voided the policy.

Banks froze the Northbridge accounts.

Most of Ethan's education money was recovered.

Not all.

Daniel stopped caring about the missing amount before his attorney finished explaining it.

"Can she contact Ethan?"

"Not without court approval."

"That's what matters."

The criminal charges included attempted murder, aggravated assault, child-related offenses tied to coaching and endangerment, fraud, identity theft, and conspiracy.

The exact legal language changed over time.

Daniel did not memorize it.

He memorized other things instead.

The first night Ethan slept all the way through without waking Daniel.

The first morning Evelyn climbed three stairs during physical therapy.

The first time Ethan laughed in the house without immediately looking toward the doorway.

Those were the victories.

Then, two months after the fall, Daniel received a letter.

Olivia had written to Ethan from jail.

The envelope never reached the boy.

Daniel's attorney intercepted it first.

Daniel almost threw it away unopened.

Then he saw the final line through the thin paper.

Tell him I did everything because I loved him.

Daniel stared at the sentence.

That evening, Ethan asked a question Daniel had been afraid would come.

May you like

"Dad... does Mom still love me?"
