Chapter 14 - Betrayal in the Boardroom
"She was going to ruin everything!" Margaret suddenly screamed, dropping her civilized facade completely.
The entire remaining crowd gasped in total terror.
Several high-profile guests stepped back toward the exits.
"Claire was going to hand all our private financial records over to the state prosecutor!" Margaret yelled, her eyes wide and bloodshot.
"She didn't care that Caleb would go to federal prison!"
"She didn't care that our family name would be dragged through the mud!"
"She was selfish!"
Adrian stared at his mother, his heart completely breaking into dust.
"She was doing her duty as an honest person," Adrian said softly.
"She gave you a chance to fix it, didn't she?"
"She called you before she got in that car."
Margaret wiped her face with a harsh gesture.
"She gave me an ultimatum," Margaret spat bitterly.
"She said if I didn't force Madison to resign by midnight, she would file the police report herself."
"So you called Madison," Natalie realized, tears streaming down her face.
"And Madison paid someone to cut her brakes at the gas station near the highway."
Margaret stayed silent.
Her silence was louder than a confession.
"And you followed her car to make sure she didn't survive," Adrian said quietly.
"I stood at the top of that ravine," Margaret admitted in a cold, hollow voice.
"I watched her car burn."
"And I ensured that red box stayed hidden until tonight."
"You are a monster," Adrian said quietly.
He turned toward the front entrance.
Detective Miller stepped back into the foyer, holding a newly signed arrest warrant on his tablet screen.

"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder."
