Chapter 8 - THE ELEVATOR TRAP

A blood-stained hand wedged itself between the closing elevator doors.
The safety mechanism triggered, forcing the doors back open.
Clara gasped, pulling back a scalpel she had snatched from the tray.
It was Ethan, his uniform scorched and his face covered in soot.
"It's me! Don't shoot!" Ethan panted, slipping inside as the doors finally shut.
The old elevator groaned as it began its slow descent to the basement levels.
"Dr. Miller escaped into the west wing," Ethan said, checking his rifle magazine.
"He was working with the mercenary syndicate that attacked the hospital base."
"Why would a renowned surgeon help mercenaries?" Clara asked, monitoring Tyler's pulse.
"Because Tyler discovered a bio-weapon formula hidden inside military medical shipments," Ethan revealed.
Clara looked down at the pale, unconscious soldier in horror.
"The bullet in his chest... it wasn't an accident," Clara realized.
"They tried to assassinate him before he could deliver the drive to central command."
Suddenly, the elevator shuddered violently and screeched to a halt between floors.
The overhead lights flickered once and extinguished completely.
Emergency red warning lights bathed the small lift in a bloody crimson hue.
From above the elevator car, heavy mechanical thuds resonated through the cables.
Someone was cutting the steel cables from the roof.
"They're dropping the shaft!" Ethan yelled, grabbing Clara's waist.
