Chapter 10 - SURGERY UNDER FIRE

The underground medical bunker was frozen in time, illuminated by harsh fluorescent strip lights.
Clara immediately went to work, gathering surgical instruments from sealed glass cabinets.
"I need you to act as my surgical assistant, Captain," Clara commanded firmly.
Ethan wiped his bloodied hands on a clean towel and stepped beside the operating table.
"Tell me what to do, Doc."
"Keep his chest chest cavity clear with this suction pump while I locate the projectile," Clara explained.
She carefully sliced open the sutured flesh, exposing the wounded tissue.
The bullet was wedged dangerously close to the pulmonary artery.
One millimeter off, and Tyler would bleed out within ten seconds.
On the heavy iron door outside, loud metallic thuds echoed through the bunker.
The mercenaries were using a thermal lance to burn through the steel hinges.
Sparks began to shower into the darkness from the frame of the door.
"Ignore them! Focus on your hands!" Ethan barked, holding the suction tube steady.
Clara sweat profusely, her fingers steadying as she guided the surgical clamp toward the shiny metal fragment.
Her metal probe made contact with the bullet with a soft clink.
"I have a grip on it," Clara whispered, her breath hitching.
Slowly, agonizingly, she extracted the jagged lead fragment from Tyler's chest.
A sudden gush of dark blood pooled in the cavity.
"He's crashing! Blood pressure zero!" Clara shouted.
