"Impressive survival skills, Captain Ross," Dr. Miller said smoothly over the sound of falling rain.
"And Dr. Vance... I always knew you were far too resilient for your own good."
Armed mercenaries stepped out from the SUVs, aiming heavy assault weapons at the exhausted group.
Ethan raised his rifle, but his chamber clicked empty with a hollow snap.
He was completely out of ammunition.
"It's over, Ethan," Dr. Miller sneered, stepping closer.
"Give me the drive Tyler stole from our laboratory facility, and I might let Dr. Vance live."
Clara stepped in front of Tyler, her eyes blazing with fury.
"You violated your medical oath, Miller! You used hospital supplies to manufacture biological toxins!"
"Medicine is about power and evolution, Clara!" Miller replied coldly.
"A concept an idealistic ER resident like you could never comprehend."
Miller gestured to his guards. "Execute the captain and take the girl."
Before the mercenaries could raise their rifles, a high-caliber sniper round shattered the night air.
The mercenary standing beside Dr. Miller collapsed instantly into the mud.
A second shot tore through the front windshield of the lead SUV, detonating its engine block.
Panic erupted among the guards as concealed snipers opened fire from the surrounding rooftops.
"Ambush! We're under fire!" the mercenaries screamed, breaking formation.
Ethan didn't waste a microsecond.
