Chapter 26 - Thanksgiving again

One year after the original incident, Thomas invited us for Thanksgiving.
I said no.
Not because Rachel would be there.
She would not.
Because Lily asked:
“Can we do ours?”
So we did.
At our house.
Fourteen people.
My mother.
Daniel’s parents.
Mark’s parents for dessert only.
A few friends.
Claire? No Claire in this story. No.
Rachel was not invited.
That boundary remained.
Lily wore a purple dress.
No princess crown this time.
She had declared herself:
“Too old for baby crowns.”
Six going on forty.
During dinner, she reached across the table for cranberry sauce.
My entire body noticed.
Before I could react, Mark said:
“Want me to pass it?”
Lily said:
“I can reach.”
Then she stopped.
Looked at me.
“Is reaching rude?”
“Sometimes. You can ask.”
She smiled.
“Pass cranberry sauce, please.”
My mother passed it.
Nothing happened.
No hand grabbed her wrist.
No adult used manners as permission for violence.
Later Thomas arrived with Judith.
He stood in doorway.
“This feels strange.”
“Different house.”
“Different rules?”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Understood.”
That mattered.
Rachel remained on probation and running a smaller version of Ravel & Pine.
She had paid the first civil settlement installments on time.
No new misuse.
No contact with Lily.

I did not know whether that was remorse or compliance.
Either was safer than before.
