Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the System

One year after the collapse of Ashford Global, the world had moved on.

The name Nathan Ashford was now just a footnote in business school textbooks on corporate fraud.

I sat in the executive office of the Vale Foundation in Chicago, reviewing our annual grant distributions for emergency women's shelters across the country.

The room was filled with warm sunlight, a stark contrast to the dark, suffocating halls of my past life.

Suddenly, my laptop screen flickered twice.

A sharp, high-pitched chime echoed from my private terminal—the encrypted line reserved exclusively for my father's security network.

A small red dialog box popped up over my spreadsheets.

WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED DATA BREACH DETECTED.

SOURCE: ILLINOIS STATE PENITENTIARY ENCRYPTED SERVER.

My fingers froze over the keyboard.

I tapped a command sequence to isolate the incoming data packet.

A video file began playing automatically in the center of my screen.

The camera angle was low and grainy, clearly recorded from a smuggled micro-device inside a prison visitation booth.

On the screen sat Nathan, wearing his orange jumpsuit.

His face was thinner, his hair cropped short, but his eyes held a strange, manic intensity that I hadn't seen even on the night he held the whip.

Sitting across from him behind the glass wall was a man in an expensive grey suit.

The man’s face was obscured by the reflection, but his silver signet ring caught the fluorescent light.

"She took everything, Victor," Nathan’s voice rasped through the laptop speakers.

"She didn't just ruin me... she erased me."

The man named Victor leaned closer to the glass.

"Elias Vale thinks he cleared the board, Nathan," Victor spoke in a smooth, cultured European accent.

"He forgot that his former partners still hold the offshore keys."

"The money you thought was seized by the Department of Justice?"

Victor smiled softly, showing a row of perfect white teeth.

"Only forty percent of it was in Saint Kitts."

"The remaining sixty million is sitting safely in a private vault in Geneva."

May you like

"And it belongs to anyone willing to break Elena Vale."
