Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Ashford

By eight o'clock the following morning, the news of the Ashford Global collapse had sent seismic shocks across the global financial markets.
In major trading hubs from London to Tokyo, television screens flashed red ticker tapes detailing the unbelievable story:
BILLIONAIRE CEO NATHAN ASHFORD ARRESTED ON FEDERAL RACKETEERING AND ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES.
ASHFORD GLOBAL STOCK CRASHES TO ZERO; TRADING SUSPENDED PERMANENTLY.
SENATOR MONROE INDICTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR INTERNATIONAL FRAUD SCHEME.
Inside a private, high-security medical suite overlooking the Chicago skyline, I sat up in bed as a nurse carefully adjusted the bandages across my back.
The physical pain had begun to dull, replaced by an overwhelming sense of quiet, absolute peace.
My father sat in a leather armchair near the window, reviewing a series of legal documents on his tablet.
"The federal prosecutors have formally denied bail for both Nathan and Celeste," my father reported without looking up.
"Given the flight risk and the overwhelming video evidence, they will remain in maximum-security detention until trial."
"And his legal team?" I asked softly.
"What legal team?" my father countered, a dark, faint smile touching his lips.
"Every major defense firm in the country has refused to take his case."
"His personal assets have been frozen, and the company's insurance policy specifically excludes coverage for intentional criminal acts."
"He is currently represented by a court-appointed public defender."
A soft knock sounded at the door, and my father’s chief legal advisor, David Vance, walked into the room carrying a thin leather briefcase.
"Good morning, Miss Vale," David said respectfully, setting the briefcase on the bedside table.
"I have the final corporate liquidation documents for your review."
"Ashford Global Logistics has been officially declared insolvent."
"Under the emergency restructuring act, Vale Dominion has acquired eighty-five percent of the company's maritime assets for pennies on the dollar."
I looked at the documents, seeing Nathan's former shipping empire re-branded under my family's name.
"What happens to the employees?" I asked.
"The dock workers, the ship crews, the office staff—they were innocent in Nathan's schemes."
"Every legitimate employee has been retained with a twenty percent salary increase and full benefits," David confirmed smoothly.
