Chapter 3 - The Falling Dominoes

The front doors swung open again, and team after team of forensic investigators filed into the estate, carrying silver equipment cases and evidence bags.
They moved with practiced efficiency, stripping the house of laptops, files, drives, and financial ledgers.
Nathan was forced to his knees in the center of the hall, the iron handcuffs biting deeply into his wrists.
His phone, resting on the floor near his knees, continued to buzz relentlessly.
Messages poured in faster than the screen could refresh.
> BOARD CHAIR: The board has unanimously voted to strip you of all executive power. Federal marshals are at headquarters.
> CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: The bank just pulled our credit line. The shipping vessels in Rotterdam are being impounded by customs.
> PRIVATE BANKER: Your personal accounts have been frozen under federal forfeiture laws. You have zero liquidity.
Nathan stared at the flashing screens, his mind unable to process the absolute speed of his collapse.
He had built his reputation on control.
He believed he was the chess player, maneuvering everyone around him like silent pieces on a board.
He had never realized he was simply playing inside a room my father owned.
"How?" Nathan whimpered, looking up at me, tears of pure terror finally spilling over his eyes.
"How did you do this? You were just an accountant's daughter..."
I stepped toward him slowly, supported by my father's arm.
Every nerve in my back burned with agony, but I forced myself to stand tall.
"My father didn't run a tiny accounting office, Nathan," I said, my voice echoing off the stone walls.
"He ran the intelligence audit that brought down three corrupt governments in Eastern Europe."
"When I married you, he gave you a test."
"He wanted to see if a man from nothing could handle power without becoming a monster."
I leaned down slightly, looking directly into his terrified, bloodshot eyes.
"You failed, Nathan."
May you like
"You failed on every single level."
