Chapter 9 - Victor's Version

Victor refused to speak to Ethan in person.
He gave a recorded statement through investigators.
Ethan watched with Elena beside him.
Victor looked exhausted.
No tailored jacket.
No mansion behind him.
"I am not making a confession to every rumor about me," he began. "I am telling you what I did with the archive."
He admitted editing Ethan's video.
Admitted giving selected material to Judge Avery through Miles Crane.
Admitted lying to Lily about Ethan.
Admitted obtaining emergency guardianship by presenting Elena's disappearance as proof the Cole household was unstable.
Then he said something Ethan did not expect.
"I did not order Elena kidnapped at the hotel. Crane did."
That part they knew.
"I did force Elena to write the note three years ago."
Elena's hand tightened.
"I told her I would release the Voss clip and identify her as the person who copied archive material if she went public. I believed fear would keep her away for a week. Then a month. Then I kept extending the lie because admitting the first crime would expose the next one."
Ethan knew that pattern.
Victor continued.
"I told myself Lily was safer with me. That was partly true. Elena was moving constantly. Ethan was spiraling. But I also liked that Lily made Elena stay quiet and Ethan obey court orders."
Elena looked away.
"I used a child as leverage."
No euphemism.
Then Victor explained the four names.
Judge Avery.
Crane.
A media consultant.
And Marianne Whitmore.
Elena's mother.
Elena whispered, "Mom?"
Marianne had been living in Switzerland for four years after separating from Conrad before his death.
She claimed she knew nothing about the archive.
Victor said otherwise.
"Mother knew Dad recorded guests. She hated it. She also used it twice during their divorce. Once to prove he was hiding money. Once to stop him from cutting her off."
Elena looked sick.
Victor continued.
"She gave Elena the brass key years ago because she wanted one person in the family to be able to access the backup room after Dad died."
Ethan stared at Elena.
"You didn't know?"
"She told me it opened a jewelry box."
Victor almost smiled on the recording.
"That sounds like Mom."
Then his face hardened.
"Crane knows she used the archive. That's why he has kept her quiet all these years. If you want the full history, find Marianne before Crane's people do."
The recording ended.
Elena called her mother immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Her Swiss apartment manager said Marianne had checked out two days earlier.
Destination unknown.
Then Lily walked into the room carrying the tiny brass key.
"Grandma gave Mommy this."
Elena knelt.
"When did she tell you that?"
"Last Christmas."
Everyone froze.
Marianne had seen Lily last Christmas.
Victor had told Elena and Ethan she had not been to the estate in four years.
Lily continued.
"Grandma said if Mommy came back, I should give her the key. But Uncle Victor found it first, so I hid it."
Elena's face drained.
"Where did Grandma meet you?"
Lily pointed toward the floor.
"Downstairs."
The hidden room.
Marianne had been inside the estate.
And she had known Elena might return.
