Chapter 7 - The First Night Back

Elena did not go to Ethan's apartment.

She went to a secure hospital room for observation, then to a protected temporary residence arranged through her attorney.

Ethan wanted her close.

He also understood wanting was not the same as entitlement.

Lily saw Elena that evening.

The reunion happened in a plain family-services room with beige walls and toys nobody had chosen.

Lily stood in the doorway.

Elena knelt.

For one terrifying second, Lily did not move.

Then she ran.

"Mommy!"

Elena caught her.

Both of them collapsed onto the carpet.

Ethan turned away because some moments did not need his eyes.

Lily cried into Elena's neck.

"You said find Daddy."

"I know."

"I did."

"You did."

"Uncle Victor said he didn't want me."

Elena closed her eyes.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Then Lily looked at him.

"But he did."

"Yes," Elena said.

Simple.

No speech.

Later, while Lily colored, Elena and Ethan sat with a child therapist and attorney Mara Chen.

Ethan asked the question that had lived in him for three years.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Elena did not hide behind Victor.

"At first, because he threatened you and Lily."

"And after?"

"Because I found proof and thought one more week would make me safe enough to return. Then another. Then I learned he'd used the edited video in court. I thought coming back would make him release everything."

"You could have called me."

"I tried."

"You could have tried more."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Yes."

That answer hurt because it did not fight him.

"I was scared," she continued. "And ashamed. Every month made the next call harder. I told myself I was protecting you. Sometimes I was protecting myself from hearing how much I had hurt you."

Ethan looked down.

There it was.

Victor's coercion was real.

So were Elena's later choices.

Both mattered.

Elena asked, "Why did you lose Lily?"

Ethan flinched.

"Victor gave family court the edited video."

"Only that?"

He looked at her.

No.

He had smashed a camera outside the courthouse.

Threatened Victor in a hallway.

Missed one supervised visit after drinking too much the night before.

Nothing that justified three years of separation.

Enough to help Victor's story.

"I made it easy to call me unstable," Ethan said.

Elena nodded.

No absolution.

Good.

That night Lily asked where she would sleep.

The adults stopped.

The judge had not yet modified guardianship.

Victor was missing.

Technically the placement structure was a mess.

Lily looked frightened.

"Do I go back to the house?"

"No," Ethan and Elena said together.

Lily smiled for the first time.

Emergency temporary placement was arranged with Elena under supervision, with Ethan receiving immediate expanded contact.

Paperwork did not feel romantic.

It felt safe.

At 11:40 p.m., David Orr called Elena's attorney.

He had the third copy of the archive index.

He was ready to cooperate.

But someone had broken into his home thirty minutes earlier.

And the only thing missing was his son's old rehab file.
