Chapter 11 - The Night Elena Left

Marianne had driven Elena out through the north service gate.
Not Victor.
Elena remembered the car.
She had not known her mother was driving until they were miles away because Victor made her sit in the rear footwell beneath a blanket.
"You told me you were helping," Elena said.
"I thought I was."
Marianne drove her to a motel near Rockford.
Gave her cash.
A prepaid phone.
Then left.
"Why didn't you take me to police?"
"Because Victor said Crane had already sent the Voss clip to two prosecutors."
"Did he?"
"No."
Marianne had believed him.
Or chosen to.
The next morning Elena called her mother.
Marianne did not answer.
Then her prepaid phone stopped working.
Victor's people had registered the number through a family security vendor and traced it.
Elena abandoned the motel.
For months she moved between friends, shelters, and short rentals.
She contacted journalists twice.
One backed out after receiving anonymous threats.
Another told her the evidence was too dangerous without original files.
"And Ethan?" Marianne asked.
Elena looked at him.
"I wrote."
"Why no direct call?"
"I was terrified his phone was monitored."
Ethan thought of the photographs in the hidden room.
It probably was.
Still, Elena had eventually learned Victor could not monitor everything.
She admitted there were moments she could have reached Ethan more directly.
"I kept telling myself I needed better proof first."
Ethan nodded.
"And I kept telling myself getting angrier in court proved how much I cared."
Elena looked at him.
Neither statement repaired three years.
Both made the next conversation possible.
Marianne then confessed the final part of that night.
She had returned to Whitmore estate after dropping Elena off.
Victor was waiting.
He demanded to know where Elena went.
Marianne refused.
Crane showed her a clip from the archive.
Not of Marianne.
Of Lily.
Three years old.
Sleeping.
Crane said, "Children are easiest to protect when adults cooperate."
Marianne told Victor the motel.
Elena went completely still.
"You gave him my location."
Marianne cried.
"Yes."
Elena stood.
"We're done for today."
Marianne nodded.
No plea.
Good.
Outside, Ethan followed Elena into the hallway.
"Do you want me to stay?"
She looked at him.
For three years everyone made decisions for her.
"Yes."
So he stayed.
Not touching.
Just there.
Then Naomi called.
"We found Crane's offsite archive."
Ethan's pulse jumped.
"Where?"
"Not a server farm. Not a warehouse."
Pause.
"A storage unit rented under your company name."
Ethan went cold.
"My company?"
"Cole Urban."
Elena looked at him.
Crane was preparing one last version of the story.
And this one made Ethan look like the owner of the blackmail archive.
